But the local history of Brown’s Cleaning & Laundry traces the family business to 1933, when Grace Black bought a drycleaning operation. In 1935, Grace’s brother, Wayne Baxter took over the company that became Wayne Baxter Cleaners. In 1968, after working for the family business for 25 years, Wayne’s nephew, Joe B. Brown, purchased the company, renaming the company Brown’s Cleaning & Laundry. Joe’s son, Philip, joined the business in 1976 as the company began Restoration Services after the purchase of Alabama’s first deodorizing Ozone machine. Joe and Philip worked to expand the business’ services to include a Full Service Laundry, Wedding Gown Preservation, on-site Leather/Suede/Fur cleaning and Vault Storage. Brown’s further expanded in 1982 by purchasing Fort Payne Laundry & Cleaners. In 1992, Philip took over a company that continues to innovate and grow to better serve its customers.
